Historic U.S. Highway 80, Laguna and Lake Cuyamaca Tour to Julian

Arrive by 0830; Driver Meeting 0845; Departure 0900

This casual scenic tour includes the mid-county portion of historic US-80 and the Laguna Mountains, and ends in Julian. We will begin at Corner Bakery in San Diego Mission Valley, and connect with Olde Highway 80 in El Cajon.

US-80, officially in commission from 1926 to 1964, was originally a 3000 mile southern complement to Route 66. It was known as the Ocean-to-Ocean Highway, the Dixieland Overland Highway, and eventually The Broadway of America, traversing from Tybee Island, GA, to Point Loma, CA. It was the first US transcontinental Highway. US 80 still officially exists from Tybee Island to Dallas.

We will drive East on Olde Highway 80 through the historic areas of Flinn Springs, Alpine, Guatay and Pine Valley, then up the twisty Sunrise Highway to Mt. Laguna along the 6000’ National Scenic Byway. You will be surrounded by Oaks, Cedars, and Jeffrey Pines in the Cleveland National Forest, and enjoy a great overlook view of the desert.

You can enjoy lunch on a veranda overlooking Cuyamaca Lake and Mountains. Please bring cash for lunch at the cafe/pub. After lunch, we will proceed to a winery orchard in Julian where you can sample a piece of Julian pie. Wine tasting will be available for a small fee.

For those wishing to overnight in the area before the tour, we can provide suggestions in the Mission Valley area, or in the Gas Lamp Quarter; both fairly close to our starting point.

For those wishing to overnight the Julian area after the tour, we can provide suggestions in the area for motels or B&Bs.

SD Minis and SCMM members are invited. Please bring a GMRS/FRS WalkieTalkie, Channel 7, sub-channel 21, and a full tank of fuel.
